Self Reflection Memo

Self-Reflection on Writing for Engineers Course

Date: December 12, 2023

To: Crystal Rodwell

Dear Crystal Rodwell,

As the semester comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my experience and improvement throughout the semester.

My experience of writing in an engineering environment was limited at the start of the course, focusing mostly on technical reports and documentation. The curriculum, on the other hand, broadened my perspective by introducing me to other writing styles and challenging me to explain complicated ideas to diverse audiences. This shift in emphasis compelled me to recognize my limitations and modify my writing style accordingly.

One of my early skills was my ability to think analytically and solve problems, which translated nicely into writing clear and simple technical documents. However, I rapidly identified a flaw in communicating complex ideas to a non-specialized audience. The training stressed the necessity of clarity without sacrificing technical precision, which compelled me to examine and enhance my communication skills.

Developing persuasive writing abilities was a huge difficulty for me. I had to get out of my comfort zone, express my thoughts on engineering difficulties, and strike a balance between scientific rigor and persuasive speech. This intimidating issue presented an excellent chance for personal and professional development.

The course’s collaborative approach was a highlight for me. Engaging with other points of view through peer review and comments was helpful in honing my writing style. Constructive criticism from my peers assisted me in identifying flaws in my communication and enhanced my capacity to deliver feedback to others—a skill that is essential in any professional context.

My writing went from a rigidly technical to a more accessible and persuasive shape during the semester. I learnt to adapt my language to different audiences, focusing on clarity without losing precision. The iterative structure of the assignments reinforced the notion that writing is a skill that can be improved via practice and reflection.

Finally, I want to express my gratitude for the profound experience that this course gave. It not only improved my technical writing abilities, but it also shed light on the nexus of successful communication and engineering practice. This course has given me a fresh respect for the necessity of communicating ideas persuasively in the professional sphere.

Thank you for your guidance and support throughout the semester.

Sincerely,

Martin Lopez
